EU Parliament awards 2026 Sakharov Prize to International Criminal Court
The European Parliament awarded its 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court and its officials. Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the prize recognizes the court's work "in upholding international law and justice."
The Hague-based court tries individuals charged with genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression. Parliament's announcement cited lawmakers' concern over US sanctions on the court and its staff, and AP noted the award came days after the Trump administration announced new sanctions. The €50,000 prize will be presented in Strasbourg in December.
Why it matters: The award is a political show of support from EU lawmakers for the court as it faces US sanctions on its judges, prosecutors and staff.
