Serbia's Vučić concedes election defeat to student-led movement

Vučić said late Sunday that "it is clear that we have lost these elections," speaking at the Belgrade headquarters of his Serbian Progressive Party, the BBC and the Guardian reported. Final results were not yet available.

Monitors CeSID and Ipsos put turnout at 67.6% by 7pm local time, the highest since 1992, according to the Guardian. Vučić called the snap vote after two years of protests set off by the 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad that killed 16 people.

Why it matters: The result signals the end of 14 years of government led by the Serbian Progressive Party, a major political shift in a country that is a candidate to join the European Union (EU).
