Magnitude 7.0 quake strikes deep off Japan's Ogasawara Islands, no tsunami

The quake hit around 11:10 a.m. local time, about 1,000 km south of Tokyo, and measured 3 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 on Chichijima and Hahajima islands, the agency said, according to Xinhua and Kyodo News. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said there was no tsunami threat.

Kyodo said shaking was felt across a wide area of eastern and northeastern Japan despite the distance.

Why it matters: Japan sees frequent strong earthquakes, and officials confirmed this one posed no tsunami risk to coastal areas.
