France makes 1,314 arrests as cost-of-living protests end in clashes

The interior ministry estimated about 410,000 people took part in about 298 protests, while the CGT union put the number at around 800,000, CBS News and AP reported. Police used tear gas and water cannon in several cities including Paris, and 53 officers were hurt, the ministry said, according to the BBC.

Nuñez said marches mostly "passed off well" but police later faced "an extremely elevated level of violence" from "ultra-left" groups. He said some shops were looted, but on a far smaller scale than a week earlier, when some 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted.

Why it matters: France deployed up to 70,000 officers to prevent a repeat of last weekend's riots, which the BBC described as some of the worst disorder in the country's modern history.
